New mattresses a sign of support for shelter

straw mattressA simple thing like better bedding may be a sign of improved financial stability for the Torres Community Shelter.After earlier hitting shaky financial ground and needing emergency city funding, the shelter is seeing an increase in support and is starting to stabilize, said Tom Perdue, president of the shelter board of directors.

“We’re making progress,” he said. “The community has been really responsive and we’re able to make some important improvements.”

Perdue said rather than worrying about the possibility of shutting its doors, the shelter is now able to make a needed purchase.

With a $5,000 grant from the Waste Management Foundation and a United Way grant of a yet unknown amount, Perdue said the shelter will be able to purchase new mattresses covered in antibacterial material that can also be washed down with an antibacterial solution.

“It is a big deal from a standpoint of quality, health, standpoint of business,” he said. “I’m thrilled it’s going to make a difference.”

Last August, the shelter applied for emergency funds from the city when it came very close to having to close its doors after seeing a yearly budget shortfall of $40,000 and a 32-percent decrease in funding with the shrinking of federal grants available.
